Huron County turns down hospice funding request

A request for a grant of $650,000 from the Huron Hospice was turned down at county council's meeting this week.

The money was to be used for an expansion at the hospice and Warden Jim Ginn said the request generated a significant amount of discussion, but councillors felt it was more than they could do.

“The big issue is that it's in the field of health care and it's a provincial responsibility and it's just such a big user of funds," said Ginn.

Ginn pointed out that health is about 50 per cent of the provincial budget so it's not something local municipalities can be part of.

“Those dollars add up really quickly in the health care field and you know health care is 50 per cent of the provincial budget so there's no way that local municipalities can fund even a fraction of it, so it makes it difficult to put money into that field,” added Ginn.
