Arena reopening plans for for Saugeen Shores, Ripley

A tentative arena reopening plan has been approved for Saugeen Shores.

The Committee of the Whole approved the reopening plan on September 14th, with the Southampton Coliseum set to open September 28 and the Plex in Port Elgin set for an October 13 opening. Staff will use a phased approach, with only minor sports groups allowed in for use to start. Phase 2 will allow recreational groups and private ice rentals. Public skating and programming would commence in Phase 3.

Saugeen Shores staff are working on a reopening plan for the community halls and meeting spaces, which will remain closed for now. More information on the arena re-openings can be found on http://www.saugeenshores.ca/Arenas. The facilities have been closed due to COVID-19 since March 13.

“We know that our user groups are eager to get back on the ice,” said Mayor Luke Charbonneau. “Town staff are ready to gradually welcome everyone back to the arenas in a safe and measured way.”

Meanwhile, the Township of Huron-Kinloss has voted to put in ice at the Ripley Area by this Saturday, September 19.

Last week, council discussed a request from the Bruce County Kings hockey program about installing the ice early and booking 30 hours of ice per week for their club.

Staff has determined that the rental rate of $125 per hour plus HST is required to "ensure the program is not subsidized by taxpayers". After Thanksgiving weekend, the rental rate will be reduced to $116 per hour.

A report noted that the short-term financial impacts will be revenue-positive, and the long-term benefits of booking open, unused ice times will assist in reducing the operating deficit.
