NWMO scientist responds to fliers

A top scientist with the Nuclear Waste Management Organization says anti-nuclear fliers being sent to homes across Midwestern Ontario are an attempt at fear-mongering.

Paul Gierszewski, the director of Safety and Technical Research for the NWMO, said it's a deliberate attempt to deceive the public.

"The flyer is deliberately vague. There are graphics there that are not based on any particular analysis or results," said Gierszewski. "And there is a choice of language which is suggestive of things; dump, abandon and contaminate. There is no scale put on any of this to help people judge the project."

Gierszewski said the purpose of the project is to protect water and people and storing the fuel at the Bruce site, which is being done currently, is not the long-term solution to this problem. He called the information contained within the fliers an attempt at fear-mongering.

"And even the figures, the two photographs that have been included. They're not from our project, they're not relevant to us," said Gierszewski.

The NWMO recently published a video in which the containers used to store nuclear waste survive being dropped from a tower, lit on fire, submerged in water and hit by a speeding freight train with no release of radiation.
