Residents discuss opposition to South Bruce Nuclear Waste Repository

About 100 South Bruce Residents who oppose an underground repository for used nuclear fuel gathered recently at a fundraiser for the Protect Our Waterways - No Nuclear Waste organization.

Residents also had a chance to talk about mobilization efforts against the establishment of the Deep Geological Repository in South Bruce. Ignace is the only other community under consideration for the facility by the Nuclear Waste Management Organization.

Board members of Protect Our Waterways - No Nuclear Waste also spent time updating participants on efforts so far.

“I was overwhelmed with the community support on hand for this planning and information meeting. Seeing the high volume of residents opposed to this nuclear dump come out to support our organization, learn more and dig deep with funding to continue our efforts is amazing. I’m so proud of our community” said Michelle Stein, chairperson for Protect Our Waterways - No Nuclear Waste.

The open-air meeting was organized with the support of Wellington Water Watchers.

“It is truly amazing to see the speed at which Protect Our Waterways - No Nuclear Waste has mobilized residents to take action. Wellington Water Watchers is proud to stand in support of Protect Our Waterways - No Nuclear Waste and South Bruce residents opposed to this dump. David is rising to meet Goliath” said Mike Balkwill, campaign director for Wellington Water Watchers.

COVID-19 social distancing protocols were enforced at the August 11, 2020 meeting.
