COVID-19 cases jump in Huron and Perth

The Huron Perth Public Health medical officer of health expects to be reporting more cases of COVID-19 today after six new cases were identified over the weekend.

There are currently 13 cases being tracked across Huron and Perth.

Dr. Miriam Kalssen said the newest cases are related to a workplace outbreak at the Zehrs Country Markets south of Bayfield and in Dashwood and many of them are clustered within one or two households. She added these cases are also connected to a larger spread of cases across Southwestern Ontario.

"We haven't assigned the exact municipalities yet, but they will be in Bluewater or South Huron based on what we know so far. These cases are also connected to a larger spread of cases across Southwestern Ontario," said Dr. Klassen. "There were connections to the larger outbreak that's going from Windsor-Essex, Chatham-Kent, Oxford and Elgin and Huron-Perth. None of the cases were a new case with no connection to a previous known case."

She said at this time the risk to the public is very low but recommends anyone who was shopping or visiting either store should self-monitor for symptoms.

She also advised everyone in Huron and Perth to continue to observe the public guidelines because COVID-19 is still out there.
