Teen dies in Sauble Beach fire

An early morning structure fire in Sauble Beach has resulted in the tragic death of a 17-year-old young woman.

Fire officials said the blaze sparked in a bunkie the teen was sleeping in at the time. Another person inside of the bunkie was able to escape without serious injuries.

“These are the tragedies our firefighters are trained to address but no one ever wants to find themselves in this position,” said Chief Normand Beauchamp in a statement.

Members of the South Bruce Peninsula Fire Department were able to quickly extinguish the fire, which prevented the flames from spreading to the adjacent house.

“Our hearts are broken today. Our community lost a young life needlessly. If anyone sleeps in your backyard bunkie, please install a smoke detector. The life you save could be your child’s,” said Mayor Janice Jackson.

The identity of the 17-year-old has not been released.

Ontario Provincial Police and the office of the Ontario Fire Marshal have taken over the investigation.
