Police warning the public after romance scam nets $8,300

South Bruce OPP is warning the public following a recent internet scam that cost a South Bruce resident a large sum of cash.

The romance style scam typically happens on social media sites. An online "pen-pal" gains the victim's trust and affection, and then starts asking for personal information or money. This particular scam ended up netting the fraudster $8,300 from the victim.

Modern day scam artists use the internet to come up with fairly elaborate scams, and will sometimes use the names of legitimate businesses or companies to trick you into paying them.

Police urge caution with unsolicited emails, phone calls, letters, even visitors at the door. And to never give out personal or financial information online.

Anyone interested in more information on fraud can contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501 or check online at http://www.antifraudcentre.ca/.
