Local MPP excited about new program to help improve rural broadband

Applications are now open for a new program to help improve broadband and cellular service in rural areas.

In a release on July 9th, Huron-Bruce MPP Lisa Thompson states it's critical for her riding to get better internet connectivity. Applications for the $150 million available from Ontario's Improving Connectivity for Ontario program, or ICON, opened Thursday. Any application from an area in Ontario that does not meet the national standards for broadband speeds would be eligible for provincial funding.

Thompson says the new funding will help drive economic growth and investment in the area as well as creating new jobs. It will also allow for more people to be able to work from home more effectively given the new realities brought on by COVID-19.

Municipalities, Indigenous communities, non-profits and tele-communications service providers are encouraged to apply for funding to improve service in their area. The deadline for the first round of applications is August 21st.

“My offices in Kincardine and Blyth have always received complaints about the lack of high speed internet services in the area,” said Thompson. “But now, with the pandemic keeping families at home, this deficiency has been exposed and the need has been magnified.”

"The outbreak of COVID-19 reinforced the need to improve access to reliable broadband and cellular service as more people work and learn from home in order to practice physical distancing," said Laurie Scott, Minister of Infrastructure. "By making these investments we will help to ensure every region in the province can participate in the modern digital economy, and contribute to Ontario's economic recovery."
