All available members of the South Bruce Ontario Provincial Police actively participated in the OPP Canada Day Week traffic safety campaign which took place from June 27 to July 5, 2020. The campaign focused was on safety equipment along roadways, waterways, and trails. Officers also targeted inattentive drivers, aggressive drivers, and alcohol or drug-impaired drivers.
Over the course of the traffic safety initiative, South Bruce OPP officers laid 170 speeding tickets, one seat belt ticket, and two liquor tickets. One driver was charged with impaired driving and another received a driver's licence suspension for a warn range blood alcohol reading at the roadside.
The South Bruce OPP marine unit officers were out actively patrolling area waterways. One vessel operator was charged for having no safety equipment on board and another was charged with a muffler violation and for operating an unlicensed pleasure craft.
Area trails were patrolled by South Bruce OPP officers on All-Terrain Vehicles (ATV). There were no charges issued to any off-road vehicle operators.
"Over the past week, our officers charged 170 motorists with speeding. In these uncertain times, one thing is for sure; speeding is a dangerous and illegal choice that contributes to more serious injuries if you become involved in a crash. The campaign may have ended, but the South Bruce OPP will be continuing their dedicated patrols of our roadways, waterways, and trails" said Acting Staff Sergeant Keegan Wilcox, Detachment Manager, South Bruce OPP.
