Goderich mayor to meet with county staff about homelessness

The mayor of Goderich says he's looking forward to meeting with Huron County senior staff this week to discuss the homelessness issue that is a problem throughout the county, but has reached the crisis point in Goderich.

John Grace raised the issue at the last county council meeting and pointed out that Goderich currently has between eight and 11 people sleeping on the streets and between 17 and 21 that are sheltered.

Grace says he hopes to discuss possible long term strategies.

"We are coming together as the county and as the municipality in order to sit down and talk about, maybe, some long term strategies, but also in the short term. We are definitely in a crisis here in Goderich and we have homeless issues, not only here, but across the county, and we can't solve this on our own," said Grace.

Grace says he's encouraged by the meeting with senior county staff.

"I can tell that we'll be meeting with senior staff at the county and the town of Goderich to sit down and have a serious, in depth talk about solutions moving forward. So, I'm encouraged that this has come to the forefront and that we are going to start moving the chain," added Grace.
