Tourism a key point in Huron County recovery

Huron County's Recovery Team has recognized tourism as a major part of the Huron County economy and one of their focuses is on helping the tourism industry recover from COVID-19.

CAO Meighan Wark says with that goal in mind, they held three meetings last week with tourism operators.

"The first one was with food and beverage industry, the next was with arts, culture and recreation and the third was with accommodation providers. So we really wanted to have a conversation with them about what are their concerns, what are the priorities," said Wark.

The meetings also gave them an opportunity to let tourism operators know what the county is already doing to support them as they move forward. That includes the re-launch of the Ontario's West Coast web site.

"The other is we are launching In Your Backyard local tourism campaign, with the initial focus being on getting our locals to come out and support our local businesses, whether it's restaurants or arts, culture and recreation," added Wark.

Wark says the tourism operators she's spoken with have definitely not given up on the this season and are doing whatever they can, within the parameters set by the Province and public health, to make this summer and into the shoulder season a success.

"So some of the things that we've talked to them about are how can we as a municipal government, both at the county and the local level, work with them to help them increase the size of their patios or are there other things that we can do to help them accommodate all the changes that are coming their way," said Wark.
