North Perth cancels outdoor summer programs for 2020

After reviewing the province’s restrictions and guidelines for Stage 2 of re-opening, the municipality of North Perth has decided to cancel their recreational activities for the summer.

The town’s summer day camps, outdoor pools, and splash pad operations will not run this summer.

Although the province has announced these facilities can reopen beginning Friday, the requirements for health and safety significantly impact the Municipality’s ability to safely offer these programs.

Some factors that contributed to this decision was the staff-participant ratios, impact on program quality, and physical distancing rules.

“This was a very hard decision to make, since so many wonderful memories are made, and relief from our hot summers gained, by participation in our aquatics and week-long summer camp programs,” said North Perth Mayor Todd Kasenberg. “In carefully weighing all of our possible moves, we felt inclined to lean towards safety for all, and will work towards innovative alternatives to support physically-distanced youth experiential needs this summer.”

Day Camp staff are currently working on plans for shorter, small group programming sessions and virtual summer programming instead.
