Wellington County increases tax relief amount for some

Wellington County Council is increasing the tax relief amount for low-income seniors and persons with disabilities.

In a council vote on April 30, and after consultation with all seven member municipalities, Wellington County will increase the tax relief amount from $200 to $400 for all low-income seniors and low-income persons with disabilities.

The intent is to provide more financial assistance to those who need it most during the COVID-19 pandemic. It is also intended to assist those least able to pay a significant increase in taxes due to reassessment. Applications may be made any time following payment of the first tax installment up to and including the deadline of November 1, 2020.

“I want to thank staff and council members at all levels of government for working together to pass this resolution quickly so we can relieve some of the financial hardship that low-income seniors and low-income persons with disabilities are currently facing,” said Warden Kelly Linton.

Applications may be made any time following payment of the first tax installment up to and including the deadline of November 1, 2020.
