Owen Sound remembers workers killed or injured on the job

The City of Owen Sound raised the Canadian Labour Congress flag at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday morning at the community flagpole at City Hall with the goal of making Canada’s workplaces safer.

Mayor Ian Boddy declared April 28 as an annual Day of Mourning in recognition of workers killed, injured or disabled on the job.

He said there are more than 1,000 Canadian workers who are killed on the job every year with thousands more permanently disabled and hundreds of thousands more injured.

City council said it is a good day to look at renewed approaches for tougher occupational health and safety standards and more effective compensation.
