North Huron continues some services

North Huron is one of a number of municipalities curbing spending in order to ease the financial burden through the COVID-19 pandemic.

In a release, council put together a priority list to focus on developed a priority list which focuses on health and safety, immediate need, and continued growth.

Purchases and projects not identified as priorities will proceed after the provincial government lifts its State of Emergency.

"Recovery from this pandemic will take time and be gradual," said Reeve Bernie Bailey. "As senior levels of government announce funding resources to support local businesses, this information is being shared with local organizations. These organizations are sharing and distributing this information to the business community. If you are a business owner and not receiving the information, please contact one of the local business organizations or Carson Lamb, Clerk."

In addition to prioritizing purchases and projects, the following measures have been put into place/effect during the period of the pandemic and will reduce the financial impact in North Huron: The provincial Order to close municipally owned buildings and facilities has reduced the number of staff and is expected to reduce utility costs; Daycare and recreation programs and activities have been cancelled and staff have been temporarily laid off; Frequency of grass cutting has been reduced; The Main Street Flower Program has been suspended; Tree removal has been reduced to essential removal only; Ice was removed from the arenas earlier than usual; Summer staff hiring has been suspended; Conferences, in-person workshops and training sessions have been cancelled; In-person weekly firefighter training sessions have been suspended;

The following services remain available at this time: Staff continue to be available by phone or email; Council meetings continue through electronic participation with an opportunity for the public to attend and provide comments regarding any item on the agenda at the beginning of the meeting; Curbside garbage and recycling pick-up remains unchanged; Water and sewer services are unchanged; The Wingham Landfill remains open with limited forms of payment (debit or pre-approved account).

"The economic challenges we face are unprecedented and our frontline staff are working hard to contain the spread. Please stay at home; frequently wash your hands with soap and water; avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth; keep a 2 metre distance from others; cover your coughs and sneezes; and avoid close contact with people who are sick. Stay safe and be well."
