Mental health, long term care, financial support covered in Virtual Town Hall

Huron County residents had an opportunity to listen in as health officials and local leaders shared information about what is happening across the county during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Bruce Power hosted the session, the third Virtual Town Hall in the series. The previous two covered Bruce and Grey counties.

The full session can be listened to below.

Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Miriam Klassen provided an update on the numbers. In Huron County, there have been 196 tests, 162 of those tests were negative, 27 test results are pending and there has been seven confirmed cases.

One of those cases has since recovered and there have been no reported cases in long term care homes in Huron County.

One of the key messages of the night was about mental health.

Lynn Higgs is Manager of Mental Health and Addictions and Community Psychiatric Services at Alexandra Marine and General Hospital in Goderich.

"It's important at this time to take time for yourself to stay healthy and concentrate on what we can control," said Higgs. "So managing your mental health and psycho-social well being during this time is just as important as your physical health."

She says it is important to note that while buildings may be closed, mental health and addiction services continue to provide support.

There was also information provided about homes for the aged in the county.

Sherri Cantelon is a Registered Social Worker.

"Homes have implemented social distancing where possible and has cacelled large group programming which has been replaced by family/media social connection," said Cantelon.

She adds many precautions have been put in place following guidelines that can be seen by clicking here.

Huron-Bruce MP Ben Lobb shared an update on some of the financial supports that have now started.

Some people have already received deposits from the Canada Emergency Response Benefit, which provides $2,000 a month for those that have lost employment due to COVID-19 reasons.

And there is also the Canada Emergency Business Account to offer support to small and medium-sized businesses as they navigate the difficulties of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In either case, Lobb stresses to contact his office for more information.

Huron-Bruce MPP Lisa Thompson wrapped up the meeting encouraging people to display white ribbons in front of their homes, or tie white material around a post or tree to show support to the many people who are responding to the pandemic.

And in the end the health message remains what it has been from the beginning. Wash hands and practice social distancing.
