Scammers take advantage of pandemic

Scammers are coming out in full force, using text messages to try and scam people regarding funds being made available through the Canadian Emergency Response Benefit.

Some people have received texts that say they have received a deposit of just over $1,300, and to follow the links to claim the amount. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau confirmed in his address on Thursday that this is a scam and not how funds from the benefit will be allocated.

Other scams during the COVID-19 outbreak include door-to-door salespeople selling disinfecting products, to private companies offering health services.

Another saw people wrongly identifying themselves as members of the Red Cross and offering free masks, but to acquire those masks they would have to pay a shipping fee.
