MPP says pandemic requires unprecedented response

Huron-Bruce MPP Lisa Thompson says the province is working to ensure supplies are flowing.

She referred to the efforts of Ontario's Chief Medical Officer of Health to procure at least 5,000 more test kits for COVID-19. Dr. David Williams told a media conference Tuesday that there are not enough kits in Ontario right now, and they need to increase assessment sites and lab resources. Williams added there is a global demand for swab kits, and many were produced in northern Italy.

Thompson said officials are moving as fast as they can.

"We've ordered extra supplies and ventilators and our minister of Health is lock stepped with the Chief Medical Officer of Health and they're tracking everything," she stressed.

When asked about residents who say they are being refused testing, Thompson said those who think they might be positive may not be a priority for testing right now, but they should self isolate.

"If people are returning home from any travel, they need to be proactive, and self-isolate and respect the requests all levels of governments are asking," she said.

New testing centres are opening up in the region including in Bruce and Grey. The location of the centres in Huron, Perth and Wellington have yet to be confirmed but some are on stand by.

"Our supply chain is still moving. We want to do everything we can to make sure goods are still moving to their endpoint in rural and urban Ontario" Thompson added.
