Avon Maitland officials say school closures after March Break will help returning travellers self-isolate

Students all across Ontario are going to get an extended March Break this year, thanks to the coronavirus.

Avon Maitland District School Board Superintendent, Jodie Baker, says they got word Thursday afternoon that schools throughout the Province would be closed for the two weeks following the March Break, so they would conceivably return to class on Monday, April 6, 2020.

“We received an announcement that schools would be closed from March the 14 until April the 5 and that would allow families to settle after travel on the March Break," Baker said. "We know there are many families travelling, there are a number of groups travelling.”

Baker says that extra two weeks would allow people to get back home, stay in their homes if necessary and not put others at risk.

Baker adds, school trips have been affected by the coronavirus.

“There had been seven planned and three of them proceeded and the others were cancelled. We have been working and watching this for weeks and monitoring the situation and working closely with the travel companies, the school staff,” added Baker.
