Bruce Area Solid Waste Recycling (BASWR) will be implementing charges moving forward for the service of daily collection at the Southampton landfill.
BAWSR employees said some residents are misusing the recycling bins and will throw away non-recyclable materials and even leave garbage on the ground beside the bins.
John Rich is the councillor representative and says the first line of defence should be to reduce and re-use before recycling.
"The goal is to try and change people's buying habits and get them to stop buying these products so they're not put into our landfills. I think at the end of the day, that's where we have our shared goals."
The landfill is being redesigned and construction will wrap up in the summer of 2021.
Until then, the estimated annual cost for the service from BASWR to pick up the recycling bins at the Southampton landfill on an as-needed basis is $25,500.
