Huron County trying to sort out allowing livestock on small farm severences

Huron County councillors are asking for more information and more options on allowing livestock on small farm residence severances.

Senior Planner Denise Van Amersfoort said part of the issue is the number of livestock that can be kept on an AG4 parcel of land.

"It was our understanding it was under four animals, essentially that we were able to limit the number of livestock on a smallholding... a parcel of between one and six acres in size,” she said.

She said it turns out that's not the case, so staff is trying to negotiate an option that would allow surplus farm resident severances in Huron County and would allow barns on those small parcels to remain standing.

At this point, Van Amersfoort says, if a farm residence severance is granted, one of the conditions of the severance is that any barns on the property be taken down and so a lot of barns have been lost.

Council received the report for information but asked for another report that provided more options.
