Markdale growth stems from belief in the community

Markdale in Grey County is continuing to grow.

According to the owner of the new Foodland grocery store, last week's official opening is a sign of continued success.

Bill Graham says the 31,500 square foot store will serve the community but couldn't have happened without community support.

"Since we opened we've seen how much everybody appreciates it and also how much we really appreciate everyone including our customers for supporting the last few years getting through the old store and being so loyal to us," said Graham.

The official opening of the new Foodland on Toronto Street South was on February 27, 2020.

Graham said with investments from other businesses, such as Chapman's Ice Cream, there is proof that rural communities can grow.

"And if you take a look at our main employer in town and our vendor/partner Chapman's in what they've invested in the community and what they believe in the community, it's just proof that it can happen," added Graham.

Markdale is also in line for a new school as the Bluewater District School Board got approval in early January to go ahead with plans.
