Health Canada urging caution with edible cannabis

Health Canada is urging people who are trying edible cannabis for the first time to start low and go slow.

Huron Perth Health Unit Health Promoter Sarah Merkel said edible products can legally contain as much as 10 milligrams of THC but Health Canada recommends starting with no more than 2.5 milligrams

“The recommendation by Health Canada is to do 2.5 milligrams of THC, or less, in that edible product and the thing to keep in mind is in a product you can get from any legal source in Canada, an edible product can be up to ten milligrams,” said Merkel.

Merkel said more information about the safe use of edible cannabis can be found on the Ontario Cannabis Store website.

“The other thing is that contrary to smoking or vaping, which would take, say a couple of minutes to feel the effects, with eating edibles, we recommend you wait between 30 [minutes]and up to two hours before even thinking about using more product.”
