A Hensall company builds massive ice garage for Mercedez in Manitoba

A crew of five people from iceculture (sic) in Hensall just returned from Gimly, Manitoba where they helped build a showroom with a difference for Mercedes Benz.

Operations manager Josh Hummel explained they worked with a two-man crew from Fire & Ice in Saskatchewan for a week to build the 54-foot by 40-foot ice structure which consisted of 450 blocks of ice that weigh 300 pounds each.

“[Mercedez Benz] invited down 50-plus media and content creators and basically they gave them an ultimate Canadian winter driving experience," said Hummel. "They're going on Lake Winnipeg and they can drift around and they get to try out the studded tires and stuff like that.”

Hummel said the event was organized by AMG, a driving academy and division of Mercedes-Benz.

"Basically they teach you how to drive better in the winter and a lot of race car people do it," he explained. "It's a thrill for people to drive on the lake.”

Hummel said the garage will stay up as long as the weather allows, but with overnight lows of -42 C while he was there, it'll be there for a while.
