Enough landowners in South Bruce have signed agreements with the Nuclear Waste Management Organization to allow South Bruce to move into the next phase of the site selection process for a deep geologic repository.
"We will be moving forward with a lot of site evaluations by doing borehole drilling and environmental studies," said South Bruce Mayor Robert Buckle.
He stressed that just because they are moving ahead with the studies does not mean the decision to host a DGR is made.
"We will now...be reaching out to all surrounding communities to get their input," said South Bruce Mayor Robert Buckle. "Because potential for the growth this will produce is tremendous for this area."
Since South Bruce will be moving on in the process, Huron-Kinloss has been eliminated from the running. The only other community under consideration is Ignace in northwestern Ontario.
The NWMO is expected to make a decision on a single preferred site by 2023.
