Elementary teachers in Avon Maitland District School Board strike Thursday

A series of rotating strikes by public elementary teachers will end this week and continue into next.

A one-day strike by the Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario (ETFO) members will affect elementary schools in the Avon Maitland Board on Thursday.

There will be no classes for students in the Avon Maitland from Kindergarten to 8 and that includes Grade 7 and 8 students who attend Stratford Secondary and Elementary Schools, FE Madill, GDCI, Mitchell DHS, South Huron DHS and St Marys DCVI.

In an earlier release, ETFO President Sam Hammond stated there has been little to no talks about some proposals.

“It is crystal clear that the Ford government is only interested in cuts to public education. There has been little discussion on ETFO’s proposals for smaller classes where students get the help they need; more resources for students with special needs; protection of our world-renowned Kindergarten program; and fair compensation for educators,” said Hammond.

Stephen Lecce, Minister of Education, has consistently voiced concerns about the strike action by the unions and associations representing teachers' and various education workers saying they have an adverse effect on students.
