Owen Sound mourns loss of long-time city councillor

Owen Sounders are mourning the loss of a long-time city councillor. Peter Lemon died Friday at the age of 76.

He was first elected to council in 1985 and with some breaks from local politics over the first few years joined council in 1996 and served continuously until 2018.

Among his many accomplishments, Lemon was instrumental in the creation of the Owen Sound Non-profit Housing Corporation in 1986. Mayor Ian Boddy describes Peter Lemon as a man of the people who took on challenges that benefitted everyone.

"If you go back to not for profit housing Peter was big into that, certainly the black history cairn at Harrison Park, Peter was big into that. Bussing and the bus terminal, all those things, Peter always took the position that benefitted the most people," said Boddy.

A visitation for Peter Lemon will be held at the Brian E. Wood Funeral Home in Owen Sound on Feb. 3 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. There will be a funeral service held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 4 at St. George's Anglican Church.
