Flood warning issued for Grand River watershed

The Grand River Conservation Authority issued a flood warning, as heavy rain pours throughout the region.

The flood warning was issued for the entire Grand River watershed.

The heavy downpour that has been affecting most of the region since Friday, continues to impact the Grand River watershed. According to the conservation authority, the river flows are much higher than previously forecast.  Rainfall totals of more than 75mm have been recorded in parts of the watershed with an additional 10-20mm of rain expected overnight Saturday.

The conservation authority states that "forecasting this event has been a challenge due to the uncertainty surrounding how the precipitation would transition between rain and freezing rain on Saturday. Temperatures have remained above freezing throughout much of the watershed resulting in more rain and higher amounts of runoff into local waterways and more significant flooding than previously forecast."

Residents are reminded to take caution around bodies of water, as banks next to rivers and creeks are very slippery.

This message will remain in effect until 3 p.m. Sunday.
