Winter blast prompting an number of advisories

The Town of Saugeen Shores is declaring a significant weather event in light of all the snow that's fallen.

In a release, the town said users of roads and sidewalks in the municipality are urged to avoid unnecessary travel and use caution if doing so.

The town said it will update the public when the significant weather event has ended through its website and social media.

Huron OPP is issuing a plea to drivers to take care in the snowy weather. In a release, officers said with a snow squall warning in effect, drivers need to be prepared for reduced visibility and deteriorating road conditions.

"Motorists need to understand that the way they drive in the winter needs to be very different than how they drive the rest of the year," the OPP said.

The OPP is also asking drivers to use their full headlights every day in the winter and not rely on the automatic daytime running lights.

Remember to pack an emergency kit and have a fully charged cell phone before you head out.
