Ontario Power Generation supports Skills Opportunities Showcase

Ontario Power Generation presented a $10,000 cheque to the Four County Labour Market Planning Board today in Walkerton. The money will help with some innovative projects to meet demands for a skilled trades workforce in Bruce and Grey Counties.

OPG is the latest sponsor to support the Skills Opportunities Showcase 2-point-0 learning lab. It will be used to deliver labour market information, raise awareness, and promote career choices in the skilled trades, sciences, math and technology. The redesigned trailer is now on the road delivering interactive learning opportunities to Grade 7 and 8 students throughout Bruce and Grey counties Other sponsors include Bruce Power, the Nuclear Waste Management organization and the Municipalities of South Bruce and Huron-Kinloss. The new project is focused on providing skilled trades hands-on learning activities in the automotive, industrial, service and construction sectors. Simulators will introduce students to skills sets needed for careers in welding and heavy machine operating. Students will wire outlets, style hair, see what can be built with 3D printers, code an activity, change tires and learn what it takes to be a mason. Additionally, a wide variety of dexterity challenges will teach students the value and importance of hand and eye coordination in the skilled trades.
