Huron County councillors assessing economic development

Huron County councillors met for a special meeting on economic development this week.

CAO Meighan Wark said they looked at three aspects of the county's economic development program.  The first was the structure of the Economic Development Board, the second was staffing complement, and the third was trying to identify what economic development success looked like to each councillor.

"I think there are many projects on the go. I think they're looking for continued success in relation to those projects," said Wark. "A number of plans have been put in place over the last number of years so they want to see action in relation to those plans."

Wark said one of the challenges for economic development programs is that there isn't an accepted best practice for measuring the success of a program or economic development in a specific area.

"The request from the council was, both for the board and for staff, to put their heads together, come up with acceptable metrics, bring them in front of council so that we can do a year over year comparisons and demonstrate the success that we are seeing," she said.
