Huron's Cultural Summit works towards three year plan

Huron County's cultural development officer says the recent Cultural Summit in Blyth was the next step in developing the county's three-year cultural plan.

Rick Sickinger said the process was started with the initial summit last May.

"[Over the summer they] did a bunch of stakeholder interviews with people in the sector and refined that list of strategic priorities, so today we're taking five of those strategic priority areas and asking the public and the sector to give us action items within each of those priority areas," he said.

Sickinger said one of the priority areas in festivals and events.

“What can we do with festivals and events within the next three years within the cultural plan to move the needle forward to have better festival and events, to engage the public more, those kind of things," he said.

Sickinger said the other priorities are public art, communications and promotions, evening economy, what can we be doing in our downtown cores after 5 p.m. and heritage preservation. In most cases, they're hoping to build on past successes because they've already enjoyed some success but they feel there's still room to grow.

He said public art of a relative newcomer in the group, there is some public art in a few communities but they feel more communities could be taking a leading role in encouraging more public art.

Public input will on the plan is being accepted through the Creative Huron website.
