Santa arrives in Midwestern Ontario

Santa Claus has a busy weekend as the holiday season gets underway.

It will begin to look a lot like Christmas in St. Marys Friday night as Santa Claus comes to town with the Kinsmen Santa Claus Parade which gets underway at 7 p.m. at the Pyramid Centre. It follows its familiar route up James Street, west on Queen Street through the downtown, then south on Water Street to the Canadian Tire parking lot. Santa will then continue to Milt Dunnell Field for the lighting of the WinterLights.

Moonlight Madness takes place in Owen Sound Friday night, with the Santa Claus Parade at 10 a.m. Saturday.

The route and closure for the parade will remain the same as previous years.

City Transit will be suspended from 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturday during the Santa Claus Parade. The last bus leaving the terminal at 9:30 a.m. will be the East Bayshore route, which will make a special stop at Heritage Place.

To accommodate the detour from the closure of the 10th Street Bridge, 8th Street will remain open during the Festival of Northern Lights Opening Ceremony. 1st Avenue East and 1st Avenue West will close beginning at 2 p.m. Observers may gather along the sidewalk on the north side of the 8th Street Bridge and on the 800 blocks of 1st Avenue East and 1st Avenue West.

For additional safety during the Festival of Northern Lights Opening Ceremony, crossing guards will be placed at 8th Street and 1st Avenue East and 9th Street and 1st Avenue West.

The Bayfield Santa Claus Parade gets underway at 11 a.m. on Saturday, and the Exeter parade starts at 6 p.m.
