77 guns seized in Port Elgin

A huge cache of weapons has been seized from a home in Port Elgin.

The Saugeen Shores Police Service, the Canada Border Services Agency and the OPP Provincial Weapons Enforcement Unit conducted a search this week in an investigation into the importation of prohibited devices by a resident of Saugeen Shores.

The investigation that began in mid-October, resulted in officers seizing 77 guns, 5 Silencers, 5 prohibited high capacity magazines and ammunition.

As a result of the investigation and search warrant, the following items have been seized: 5 Suppressors (Silencers) – defined as prohibited devices by the Criminal Code 5 high capacity magazines – defined as a prohibited device by the Criminal Code 19 Registered Restricted Firearms 25 Registered Prohibited Firearms 33 Non-Restricted Firearms Ammunition

A 53-year-old Port Elgin man has been charged with: Importing a Firearm, Prohibited or Restricted Weapon, Prohibited Device Possession of a Prohibited Device X 3 Smuggling Prohibited Device into Canada X 2 Possession of Imported Prohibited Goods.

He remains in custody, waiting for a bail hearing.  The investigation is continuing.
