Listowel Wingham Hospitals recover from ransomware attack

The Listowel Wingham Hospitals Alliance has announced the end to the Code Grey incident that impacted the ability of the two hospitals to access their computer systems. The Code Grey was called in response to a cybersecurity incident that was discovered on September 25, 2019.

LWHA was forced to temporarily lock down its computer systems and connections to regional and provincial health information systems. Local physician and Family Health Team offices were also impacted.

LWHA said a thorough investigation did not identify any instances of unauthorized access to personal information, personal health information or other sensitive information.

No ransom amount was requested, nor was a ransom paid.

Some patients experienced delayed care. Two days of chemotherapy treatment at the Wingham site were delayed and a number of patients had diagnostic testing or specialist appointments deferred.

Code Grey is the hospital term used to describe the loss or failure of hospital infrastructure.

“While there are things that we can learn and improve upon, I am extremely proud of the entire hospital team. The teamwork, resiliency and professionalism of staff and physicians was exceptional," said LWHA Chief Executive Officer Karl Ellis.

He said LWHA also had exceptional support from London Health Sciences Centre and other system partners in managing the incident.

“The Hospital Board was extremely impressed with the dedication and hard work of everyone in the hospital,” said Board Chair Krishna Beharry. “Our community is fortunate to have a group of people committed to providing exceptional care during such a challenging time.”
