Local school board may have to close schools Monday

A possible strike by education workers represented by CUPE could affect some local schools Monday.

The Canadian Union of Public Employees has announced a full withdrawal of service to go into effect Monday unless a full negotiated settlement is reached prior to that date.

In a letter from the Bruce-Grey Catholic District School Friday, Director of Education Gary O’Donnell says the 13 secondary and elementary schools will be closed Monday if there is no deal with student safety in mind.

CUPE represents Educational Assistants, Custodians, Secretaries, Early Childhood Educators, Librarians, and some staff at the Catholic Education Centre in the Bruce-Grey Catholic District School Board.

In the Bluewater District School Board, CUPE members include custodial and maintenance staff only.

The Bluewater District School Board stated earlier this week that a strike contingency plan is in place and schools will stay open.

In the Avon-Maitland Maitland District School Board, schools will not be affected as support staff are represented a branch of the OSSTF and Unifor represents custodial and facilities services.
