OPP receive complaints about new phone scam

The OPP are warning of another phone scam that's operating in the area.

Half-a-dozen residents have reported receiving a call with an automated voice that states, "Canadian Majesty calling, federal charges have been levied against your Social Insurance Number.  Do not proceed to a federal building or you will be arrested. Press 1 to speak to a justice of the peace."

In one of the cases, the complainant pressed 1 and a voice answered '"Service Canada."

Police said this is a scam in the same realm as the Canada Revenue Agency fraud where they later request a payment to remove the charges from your record.

Investigators say if you receive such a call, do not press 1, do not provide the caller with any personal information or send any payment.

Instead, hang up the phone and call your local police or contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501 or online at the Fraud Reporting System to report the incident.
