More local municipalities see increase in new construction

The mayor of Arran-Elderslie has confirmed his township will issue more building permits this year compared to last year.

135 building permits were issued in the entire calendar year of 2018, compared to 132 so far in 2019.

Mayor Steve Hammel said a number of factors are driving the boom, but are not limited to Bruce Power's new warehouse in Chesley. Building lots are selling fast at the township's new subdivision near Tara, which is also indicative of the boom.

Meanwhile, new construction got off to a slow start in Minto this year with the late, wet spring, but the municipality appears to be on track for another record-breaking year.

The 10-year average for building permits to the end of July is $14 million, compared to this year’s $24.9 million.

The number of permits issued to the end of July is about the same as in 2018, but the value is up by about $2.5 million this year.
