Eco Exeter Team promotes elimination of single-use plastic products

Members of the grade nine Eco Exeter team from South Huron District High School brought their message to Huron County council recently.

Team members have made presentations to several councils in their effort to eliminate single-use plastics, similar to what has been accomplished by the Blue Bayfield group.

Teacher Amanda Keller said they believe there are a lot of little things that people can do to make a difference.

"That's where we're going to start, with single-use plastics, because we think there are a lot of simple, easy changes that people can make, simply by using a reusable produce bag instead of those plastic ones, or not using single-use water bottles, and getting rid of straws," she said. "Even those little changes can make a big difference if everybody jumps on board."

Keller said the experience gained in speaking to many different groups has really helped with the confidence of the students.

Team member Madelyn Rau agrees.

"I know the first time I talked in front of people about Eco Exeter, I was really nervous, probably shaking and everything like that. Even today, I was a bit nervous at the beginning, but after I started talking I definitely got better at speaking," she said.
