Courthouse expansion proposal, instead of new Huron County building

Another option has been introduced to the discussion around a new administration building for Huron County.

The majority of councillors agree that there would be advantages to consolidating some of the county buildings that are currently scattered in several different locations.

There has been some interest in constructing a new building on the site of the former Victoria Public School. Other possible sites that have been mentioned are Blyth and Clinton.

County Councillor Jim Fergusson suggested it would make sense to expand the courthouse in Goderich and remain in that building.

"I think the historical significance of having the governance in Goderich for the county, and the courthouse in the Square gives us an opportunity to look at that building and an expansion in that building to accommodate a new administration office there," he said.

Fergusson said he feels the cost to expand the courthouse would not be any more than it would be to construct a new building somewhere else and he also believes there is enough land around the courthouse to allow for an expansion.

"I think it would service the needs of the public and, as years go down the road, there will probably be more work from home and more work done out in the communities, but this will be a central hub," he said.
