Three Goderich doctors honoured

Three doctors from the Goderich Medical Team were honoured at a ceremony hosted by the town of Goderich, the Alexandra Marine and General Hospital and the Maitland Valley Family Health Team.

Doctors Donald Neal and Samuel Appavoo received a Schulich Award of Excellence for Faculty in Community and Distributed Sites.

That award recognizes outstanding faculty educators who have displayed exceptional interest and enthusiasm for the learning needs of their students and considers contributions in the areas of superior leadership, teaching ability, willingness to help trainees beyond the norm, the ability to serve as an exemplary role model and other important traits such as research.

Dr. Neal has also had considerable success in attracting young doctors to Huron County.

"Kids love the idea of coming to a rural setting, where they can work in a hospital and in a clinic and long term care, they can work in the emergency department and on the floors and they get to experience and participate in the full book of medicine, not just a chapter or two," said Dr. Neal.

Dr. Patrick Conlon received an award as a Distinguished Fellow at the American Psychiatric Association in San Francisco in May.  Distinguished Fellowship is awarded to outstanding psychiatrists who have made significant contributions to the psychiatric profession.

"It takes into consideration someone's clinical service, their research activities and some of their teaching endeavours, so over the course of the last year the committee reviewed it and they decided they would give me the award," said Dr. Conlon.

Dr. Appavoo was not able to attend the earlier part of the ceremony as he was called into the Emergency Department.
