Owen Sound honours youth volunteer of 2019

The City of Owen Sound has announced the 2019 Youth Volunteer of the Year.

The award honours Ryan Brown for the countless hours he spends trying to improve the lives of others.

Brown organized Owen Sound's first LGBTQ Pride Parade, which was held once again on Saturday.

Brown has been contributing his time since 2013 to organizations such as Grey-Bruce Pride, Bayview School’s Gay-Straight Alliance, Owen Sound’s Roxy Theatre, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Heart & Stroke and Student Council.

The City of Owen Sound’s Youth Volunteer of the Year award was introduced in 2018 and is chosen through nominations submitted to the City’s Community Services Committee. Brown was honoured by Mayor Ian Boddy and members of city council at a ceremony following the raising of the Pride Flag at City Hall Friday.

“Ryan is a passionate young man who works hard to see his goals become a reality,” said Boddy. “It’s astonishing to see him take on such leadership and set an example for youth in our community. He continues to lead by example and remains a resource to many."
