Exeter radar outage makes forecasting more difficult

The Maitland Valley Conservation Authority is warning the local region is basically without radar coverage.

Spokesman Steve Jackson said the Exeter Radar station is currently being upgraded. He said that means the radar coverage in the Maitland and Nine Mile watersheds will be greatly reduced until construction is finished and the new radar system is put online.

The work is blocking the existing radar system from seeing our area. The new system is expected to be online by mid-August.

American radar sources are available but the accuracy is reduced because of distance. Jackson says the ability to see storms moving towards our area on radar will be diminished. People should beware when using Exeter Radar because it will appear that there is no rain in this region even if there is a significant event occurring.
