Pride flag debate at Southgate council

Southgate will not fly a flag to mark Pride Month.

Grey Bruce Pride asked for the flag to be raised for two weeks in June.

During its meeting Wednesday, Southgate council heard from local resident Ann Gillies who urged council to not fly the flag.  She suggested council develop a policy governing flag flying that would free council from making a decision each year on the request.

Deputy Mayor Brian Milne said Southgate is an inclusive community and he had no problem flying the Pride flag.

But others on council thought flags flying at the municipal building should be limited to Canadian, provincial and municipal flags.
