Teeswater students walk for mental health

All of the students from Hillcrest Central School and Sacred Heart School both of Teeswater joined together to raise awareness and reduce the stigma of mental health.

Hillcrest Principal Sara Morrow said the students left Hillcrest and walked to Sacred Heart to join up with their counterparts there, before walking to the town hall. There, students shared information about mental health.

Morrow said the mental Health Walk helps get the conversation started.

Morrow said it is important to give students a voice and opportunities to create a change in attitudes when it comes to reducing the stigma of mental health challenges.

Hillcrest students shared how physical activity can affect mood and lead our group in a dance. Sacred Heart students spoke about the need to support those having mental health and wellness struggles. Students were reminded that mental health, like our physical health, can be unwell at times and it is important to take care of ourselves like we would if we had the flu.

Students carried signs that when put together read, "Mental Health Matters, Reduce the Stigma" to show what can happen when we work together and support each other.
