SIU clears OPP in Clarksburg man's death

The province's police watchdog has cleared the Ontario Provincial Police of any wrongdoing, following the death of a man in Clarksburg almost three months ago.

The Special Investigations Unit said OPP officers arrived at a residence in Clarksburg on the night of January 29 after receiving information that a 57-year-old man had a gun and was threatening to harm himself.

Over the course of several hours, various efforts were made to contact the man from outside the home, but with no success.

When the Tactical Response Unit gained entry into the garage of the home, the man was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot.

The Special Investigations Unit has determined there are no reasonable grounds to lay criminal charges against an OPP officer in relation to the man’s death.
