Volunteers needed for Saturday's beach and river cleanup

The annual Great Goderich Beach Clean Up is scheduled for this Saturday, rain or shine.

The Lake Huron Centre for Coastal Conservation is asking volunteers to help clean up two spots -- the Main Beach and the Maitland River at the Menesetung Bridge.

Interested community members are asked to meet at 10 a.m. Saturday at one of two locations - the pavilion at the Goderich Main Beach, across from the Beach Street Station Restaurant, or at the Meneseteng Bridge on the North Harbour Road West, at the Big Rock area.

Volunteers are asked to bring their own gloves, their own bags and their own beverage containers. A free lunch will be provided.

High school students looking for volunteer hours are reminded to bring their paperwork with them.

Coastal Stewardship Coordinator Daniela Klicper said about 175 volunteers last year picked up nearly 1,000 pounds of garbage that had washed up on the beach, including a dehumidifier and a few other unlikely items.
