Another inspection planned for Goderich Memorial Arena

Goderich council has several options to consider regarding the future of the closed-up Memorial Arena.

Ammonia coolant was pulled out of the arena last year over concerns that the old pipes were leaking.

Mayor John Grace said the first thing they have to do is conduct tests for contaminated materials, especially for asbestos. They hope to have that done within the next couple of weeks.

The mayor said there are several options for the future.

"Is there an option to sell it, is there an option to use it within the town of Goderich facilities, and is there an option that we should tear it down. There's another option of putting the ice back in. That doesn't sound like it's very feasible," he said.

Grace added the option of building a second ice pad is still very much in play, but they'll have to look at how much capacity they're going to need over the next ten or fifteen years and the viability of adding a second ice pad and would it be suitable to hook up to the Maitland Recreation Centre.

Those discussions will start after the inspection of the building and they hope to have some answers within a month or so.
