Listowel student launches provincewide walkout against education cuts

A Listowel District Secondary School student has rallied students across the province to walk out of class April 4th to protest education cuts.

Students from over 730 schools across Ontario will walk out of class at about 1:15 pm.

"I have a lot of friends across Ontario through the Ontario student trustees Association, so I have a lot of contacts and I was able to spread the word really quickly, which was awesome. It's really great to see the response that we've got," said Moore.

Natalie Moore says cutbacks like mandatory online courses and larger class sizes will have a negative impact on the majority of the student population.

"The teacher has to spread themselves so thin. The marking that they have to do just piles up, so they can't give you as good of feedback on your work that you do, and you can't, therefore, progress as a student as much as you would be able to with a smaller class," she explained.

The grade 12 student says many students might not have high-speed internet or even access to a computer. And bus students can't just pop into the library after school.

She says education staff funding cuts will also hit hard, especially in rural areas.

"Kindergarten ECE jobs being lost, office support staff, special education teachers, social workers, behavioural assistants, all of that. I thank that's going to have a really big impact on those students who require that additional support," she added.

Moore is a student trustee with the Avon Maitland Board. The campaign can be found on Instagram @studentssayno.
