Special Olympics 50th Anniversary Events

This is a big week for Special Olympics in many communities across the province.

Cities and towns are celebrating the 50th anniversary of Special Olympics Ontario.

The Municipality of West Grey will raise the Special Olympics flag at it's Durham administration office at 10:00 this morning.  In conjunction with West Grey Police Services, Mayor Christine Robinson and members of council are lending their support to raising awareness of Special Olympics and the important role sport plays in the lives of Ontario’s youth.

In Owen Sound, Police Chief Craig Ambrose will raise the Special Olympics flag during an 11:00 a.m. ceremony at the police station.

During the past 20 years, the Owen Sound Police Service has raised more than $260,000 for local Special Olympic athletes. They also started a trend in the policing community that reaches far beyond the city.

On Friday at 7 p.m., the NHL Alumni Team will take on an emergency services team at the Harry Lumley Bayshore Arena.

On Saturday, March 30, Chief Ambrose and community members who will dare frigid waters and raise money during the 20th anniversary of the Polar Plunge.  That event starts at 11 a.m. at the Harry Lumley Bayshore Arena.

For more than 20 years, the Owen Sound Police Service has hosted the Law Enforcement Torch Run Polar Plunge for Special Olympics.
